For local sailing within about 15 nautical miles of your port, you do not need a complicated offshore weather-routing system. What matters most is having a reliable short-term forecast with good local wind resolution.
Windy is a good choice because it provides an easy-to-read visual forecast and allows you to compare different weather models, such as ECMWF, ICON and GFS.
Windguru, on the other hand, is more focused on detailed wind and wave forecasts, making it particularly useful for quickly checking wind speed, direction, gusts and wave conditions at a specific location.
For local sailing, I would use Windy to understand the overall weather situation and compare models, while Windguru can be a useful second opinion, especially for wind trends.
Before leaving port, check the wind speed and direction, gusts, waves and the forecast for the next 3–6 hours, and compare the forecast with the actual conditions at the port.
If both apps show a similar forecast, confidence is higher; if they differ significantly, be more cautious and allow a larger safety margin. For short local trips, the most important information is what the wind and sea conditions are expected to do over the next few hours, rather than the long-range forecast.
