Rule 5 : Look-out
In simple terms:
Always keep a proper lookout so you know what is happening around your vessel.
You must use:
👀 Your eyes — look around for other vessels, objects, lights, etc.
👂 Your ears — listen for sound signals, especially in fog or poor visibility.
📡 All available means — radar, AIS, VHF information, etc., when appropriate.
The main idea
A proper lookout helps you answer:
“Is there anything around me that could create a danger or collision?”
For example, if you’re steering a ship at night, you shouldn’t just watch the radar. You should also visually scan the sea and listen for fog signals.
Important: AIS is an aid, not a replacement for a proper lookout.
