BECOME A YACHT-MASTER AND CROSS THE OCEANS.

The Yacht Master Theory course is designed to cover the South African Sailing Yacht Master Offshore syllabus.

To qualify for SAS Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence, you will first have to have earned your SAS Coastal Skipper Certificate of Competence.  The SAS Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competency allows the holder to skipper a sailing vessel on any extended or ocean passage on a leisure vessel.

The application must go through SAS for the Yacht-Master Offshore exam. The application form is available on the SAS web site.

SAS YACHT-MASTER OFFSHORE EXAM YOU REQUIRE:

  1. A SAS or CASA Coastal Skipper’s ticket
  2. A VHF Marine Radio Operator’s Licence (SRC)
  3. An eye test (details available on the SAS web site)
  4. A certificate of attendance at an approved first-aid course
  5. Minimum 2,500 nautical miles as an active member of crew on a sailing vessel at sea
  6. At least 48 night hours on watch
  7. Three overnight passages of at least 100 nautical miles as skipper
  8. A photocopy of your logbook which records your experience

THE REQUIRED SAS EXAM COMPONENTS:

  1. A short exam covering Colregs and IALA Buoyage (±½ hour)
  2. A chart work exam (±3 hours)
  3. An oral exam (±2 hours)

COURSE CONTENT

The Theory lectures include the following subjects:

Magnetism, Chart Work, Tides, GPS, Other Nav Instruments, Col Regs, IALA Buoyage, Knots & Ropework, MOB procedures, Basic Weather, Basic First Aid, Sail Trim, Handling a yacht in confined spaces, Anchoring, Basic Legal for boating.
